MOOC Production for the European BOLSTER Project

The European project BOLSTER, Bridging Organizations and Marginalised Communities for Local Sustainability Transitions in Europe, é an initiative funded by the European Union under the program Horizon Europe.

Its main goal é is to understand how marginalized communities are affected by the policies of European Green Deal and how their involvement in decision-making processes can strengthen support às transições sustentáveis at the local level.

Digital empowerment for sustainable transitions

Within the Capacity building component, the project consortium developed a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), fully produced in English, aimed at promoting the knowledge and skills necessary for a more active and informed participation in ecological and social transitions.

A Active Media was responsible for defining the course structure, for instructional design and for the full production of multimedia content.

The course was organized into five modules of approximately 20 minutes each, addressing different dimensions of the sustainable transition theme and its applicability.

Instructional design, audiovisual production and interactive learning

Each module also includes consolidation exercises, designed to reinforce learning in a dynamic and engaging way.

During the design phase, Active Media designed the entire pedagogical architecture, defining learning objectives, narrative sequences, interactions, and assessment formats.

Na vertente de produção, o trabalho incluiu a redação de guiões em inglês, filmagens em estúdio com uma atriz que serviu de pivot e locutora durante todo o curso e a criação de motion graphics para contextualizar e ilustrar os conceitos de forma clara e visualmente apelativa.

Interatividade e exercícios de consolidação com Genially

Two of the modules were developed in an interactive format, using H5P which allowed integrating videos with fluid navigation that allowed the trainee to choose the order of viewing and without the obligation to view all the examples presented.

Os exercícios de consolidação foram produzidos em Genially, tirando partido da sua versatilidade para criar experiências visuais e participativas. Cada exercício foi pensado para reforçar os conceitos abordados nos módulos, permitindo que os participantes testassem o seu conhecimento de forma prática e lúdica. O feedback imediato e os elementos interativos estimulam a aprendizagem ativa, promovendo o pensamento crítico e a exploração autónoma dos conteúdos.

In addition, all exercises are compatible with desktop, tablet and mobile, guaranteeing an inclusive and intuitive experience for all participants.

Challenges and solutions in creating the MOOC

One of the main challenges of the project was balancing the numerous, highly important and quality content produced by the various responsible parties and contributors, with the need to maintain clarity and accessibility for different audiences. At the same time, it was essential to ensure visual and pedagogical consistency across all course modules.

Adapting the content to different digital platforms and paying attention to accessibility and usability were equally decisive, ensuring an intuitive, inclusive and motivating learning experience.

Good practices and learnings from the project

Just as in other courses evidences the importância of combining instructional design, audiovisual production and interactive digital tools to create high‑impact online courses.

Among the lessons learned, the relevance of short, focused modules, interactivity as a retention factor, accessibility and visual and pedagogical coherence as essential elements.

The final result is an online course that combines scientific rigor, audiovisual quality and interactivity, turning complex topics into engaging learning experiences.
